Procurement for electric construction machines announced in Gothenburg

Tuesday, June 27, 2023

The City of Gothenburg has recently announced a procurement for rental of construction machines for projects carried out by the city. The procurement is one of the first in the area and means, among other things, that solutions tested within Electric Worksite will be used to a greater extent - and above all, that cleaner machines will soon be utilized in the city.

The purpose of the procurement is to sign a framework agreement for the rental of electrified - battery-powered or cable-powered - construction machines such as mini dumpers, compact excavators, wheel loaders, lifts and charging equipment. These machines will be used for different construction projects within the city and it is the first time a framework agreement has been created for electrified construction machines alone.

Through the procurement, the city wishes to increase access to cleaner and quieter electric construction machines, increase demand for the machines and also create viable pricing models for all involved parties. Anyone who rents out construction machines in the region is welcome to submit a tender.

There are several reasons to why the City of Gothenburg is asking for electric machines at this point.

"We need to cut emissions in several ways related to construction and the new agreement is intended to reduce emissions from construction machines", says Emil Björklund, Environmental Management Controller at the City of Gothenburg.

"That the procurement is announced at this time is related to our experiences from the Electric Worksite project, where we have tested different machines in different types of real-life scenarios. Within the project, we have seen that they work well and that the transition from fossil-powered to electric can be taken without major difficulties in this sector."

The hope is also for the machines to be used in other parts of the administration's activities, such as maintenance and landscaping, as well as in already procured projects where they can provide machines for contractors who do not yet own them.

The electric construction machines are expected to bring several benefits, such as:

  • Reduced greenhouse gases
  • Reduced noise – which is good for the employees, the citizens of Gothenburg and nearby businesses
  • Reduced local emissions of particles

The procurement is open until 31 August and you can read more about it below.
