Media enjoyed a sunny premiere trip

Monday, June 15, 2015

Three hours before the official start of regular operations, the media got the chance to ride the electric bus on route 55. In brilliant sunshine, the bus departed from the new stop at Chalmersplatsen.

During the 20 minute ride through downtown Gothenburg, Volvo Buses President Håkan Agnevall and Niklas Gustavsson, Executive Vice President Sustainability & Public Affairs Volvo Group, spoke about the potential for sustainable public transport and sustainable urban development opened up by the ElectriCity project and the new bus route. Above all in Gothenburg but also for other cities the world over.

After arriving at the end stop, Teknikgatan in Lindholmen, the passengers got off in what by all accounts is the world’s only indoor bus stop. Right beside the bus stop there is a café where passengers can relax while waiting for their next departure. This solution will undoubtedly be a major success this autumn when the weather is markedly different to today’s warmth and sunshine.

At the subsequent press conference, everyone who participated in the joint ElectriCity project was represented. They all emphasised that they had decided early on what the goal should be and that this was one of the reasons why the new bus route was up and running in just two years.

“In an exceptionally short time we developed a complete, integrated bus route for electrically powered public transport – a truly unique achievement,” said Håkan Karlsson from the Volvo Group executive management.

Karin Markides, CEO of Chalmers, was enthusiastic about the opportunities created by the cooperative project.

“What we have here is a living laboratory that allows us to test solutions that can be linked to other projects. Let us use this opportunity to think afresh and to take in the big picture, a sort of lever to catapult us into the future,” she said.
