Volvo Penta, ABB and Chalmers to conduct feasibility study on fast charging-at-sea

Friday, June 28, 2019

Collaboration will assess possible solutions for fast charging in marine applications.

The feasibility study will assess if electric charging technology used on Volvo Buses’ electric bus routes 55 and EL16 could be adapted for marine applications.

“While all-electric boating remains in its infancy, for this exciting new transport system to be a success and grow, a network of fast charging stations needs to be developed,” says Niklas Thulin, Director Electromobility, Volvo Penta. “Identifying the more promising solutions will be the challenge of the one-year project, which is being partly funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.”

It is the ferry Älvsnabben 4 that is in traffic over the Göta River which is to be converted to electric drive by Volvo Penta, in cooperation with Västtrafik's operator Styrsöbolaget, which is part of Transdev. The plan is for the electric ferry to be brought into service at the end of 2020.
