150 new electric buses hit the streets of the Gothenburg region

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

As of December, Västtrafik will introduce about 150 electric buses on 34 routes in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille. The scale-up makes western Sweden the largest region in the Nordics when it comes to electric buses and the large introduction of electric buses that the people of Gothenburg are now witnessing is in parts a result of the ElectriCity collaboration's tests on line 55 and EL16.

The new buses will run in several different areas in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille. In Gothenburg, many electric buses will run on routes in the southwestern parts around Frölunda square but also elsewhere. Among other things, route 58 between Eketrägatan and Bergsjön and route 114 between Brunnsparken and Saltholmen will have electric buses.

In Mölndal, about half of all the routes will be electrified. An example is route 751 between Mölnlycke, Mölndal and Frölunda.

Partille gets a partially changed traffic plan, which means a few new routes and route numbers. There, about 75 percent of all buses will run on electricity.

"This is a historically large investment. People who live in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille will notice that there is less noise from the buses, while at the same time emissions are also reduced." says Hanna Björk, head of sustainability at Västtrafik.

All city traffic powered by 2030

The major investment in electrification began last year when 60 electric buses were put into service in Gothenburg, Borås, Ale, Uddevalla and Lidköping and the first electric ferry, Elvy, was launched in Gothenburg. Västtrafik's goal is for all city public transport in the region to be electrically powered by 2030.

"We have set high environmental goals and in the coming years we will deploy many new electric buses, both in Gothenburg and in the rest of the region. It is a big challenge, but it means that we can build more sustainable cities that are better to live in." says Hanna Björk.

Preparations for the new buses are in full swing. Right now, new charging stations are being built at 13 different locations and 3 depots are being rebuilt to handle the new electrified traffic. Volvo is the manufacturer behind the buses and they will be operated by Västtrafik's partner company Transdev. All three companies are part of the ElectriCity collaboration.
